Explore aquatic biodiversity

This website, www.virtue.gmbl.se, is currently under update but you can continue to use it – and all earlier VIRTUE resources are still available!

The VIRTUE method is a great way for educators and students to learn about, and measure biodiversity of aquatic environments through the accumulation of organisms (biofouling) on CD-shaped discs that are deployed in the sea.

VIRTUE has been granted project funding from the EU Erasmus+ for further development during the years 2025 - 2027. A new project website, www.biodivocean.eu has been created. The new reporting tool that you can use to report species on the discs, is now based on the multilingual platforms iNaturalist and MINKA, and accessible through the BiodivOcean webpage, along with the new teaching resources on Invasive species and Microplastics.
All other resources will remain on the VIRTUE website.

If you have questions about VIRTUE, please contact the Gothenburg Marine Biology Laboratory by writing an email to: virtue@gmbl.se
